Be careful of Vitamin C Side Effects

Vitamin C has many health benefits such as improving immunity and prevent colds. But too much vitamin C is not the benefits but the side effects. What are the side effects?

As reported by anyvitamins.com, Wednesday (31/3/2010), vitamin C is also known by many names that ascorbic acid is water-soluble vitamins.

Because water soluble, vitamin C, considered the safest and most effective nutrients needed by the body. Vitamin C is not processed in the body and therefore can be obtained from food or supplements.

Foods that contain vitamin C include oranges, lemons, limes, cabbage, cauliflower, asparagus, broccoli and others.

Vitamin C plays a role in the formation of collagen which helps the healing of wounds. Vitamin C is also required for maintenance of cartilage, bones and teeth.

Lack of vitamin C can cause scurvy, anemia, gastrointestinal problems, and dermatitis. But remember the intake of vitamin C must be fit, do not be excessive to avoid the problem of drug overdose.

According to the Food and Nutrition Board and National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council, the dose of vitamin C for children aged 5 years amounted to 45 mg per day. While for the adults around 75-150 mg per day.

But other opinions said the body was still tolerated dose of vitamin C to 500 grams. There is also an opinion that says the ability of the body store of vitamin C can achieve a maximum of 2000 mg / day, on top of that is not absorbed by the body.

Excessive doses will only be in vain to enter the body and be excreted in the urine can even interfere with bodily functions.

Consume too much Vitamin C will have side effects such as headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fatigue, drowsiness, indigestion, intestinal cramps, diarrhea, insomnia, kidney stones, irritation of the esophagus, to tooth decay.

People who have iron excess disease or hemochromatosis should also avoid excess intake of vitamin C because it can cause iron poisoning.

While in pregnant women, excess vitamin C during the first month could suppress the production of progesterone that triggers a miscarriage.

Eat fresh fruit and drink plenty of water can remove the excess vitamin C from the body and avoid all the side effects of excess vitamin C.
